Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wilson.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in the construction business; my dad was a homebuilder in Houston for 45 years. I guess you could say it’s in my blood. After I graduated high school, I started working for him as his assistant. I spent most days visiting his projects and meeting with all the subcontractors and designers. I loved every second of working with designers. I was in awe of their abilities to take what my dad was building and transform it into a perfect masterpiece. It was then that I got the bug to do the same, but at the time, I was so young and had no clue how to get where they were. I worked with my dad while I was in college (going for a nursing degree I might add) and ended up leaving my college years earlier than expected to start raising a family.
It wasn’t until years later that I got back into the industry helping to design the homes he was building and working with his clients as the design liaison. As much as I enjoyed working with my dad, I knew this wasn’t where I was supposed to be. I needed much more to fulfill my passions.
I moved to Dallas in 2010, I knew I wanted to find myself somewhere in the design world but knew no one at the time. In 2011, I was lucky enough to start an internship with one of Dallas’s leading designers, Neal Stewart Designs. I worked with him for a year learning all the ins and outs and establishing relationships. When I left NSD, I decided to take the plunge and started my own boutique design firm. Although it was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made, it’s been an incredible ride ever since! I love living out my passion and calling.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, it hasn’t been smooth. When you dream big, you are guaranteed to have a lot of obstacles. My first obstacle was having my daughter at only 19 years old and then finding myself a single mom at 20. It’s been full of ups and downs since then. But I have always had big goals and dreams and I am determined to fulfill them.
I didn’t get a degree in design, so I have had to work my way from the bottom and prove people wrong when they don’t want to give you a chance because you don’t necessarily have the academic background. Don’t get me wrong, I would have loved to check that box but I don’t think that’s what makes a great designer. Some of the greatest artist in any field didn’t get to check that box, so I didn’t let that stop me. I am self-taught and am guided by my true gift of the art.
The advice I would give to other women just starting out is, never give up on your dreams. Your will and your determination are more powerful than you know and what you put out into the universe, you will get back. No matter what, keep reaching! If you want it bad enough, you have to work hard for it, every single day. Be bold, be daring, be different, be you! Color outside the lines.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Jessica Wilson Design story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a residential interior designer. I do all stages of the design from concept design to final decorating of the project and everything in between. I love the entire process. I think what makes me different from other designers is my knowledge of construction and being able to walk into a space and visualize all the ways it could be different. My “yes” attitude and my relationship with my clients is one thing I’m most proud of. I love creating a bond with each of them and holding their hand through the process. I also love pushing them to new places with a design they never thought they could go. I am so grateful to be able to share these journeys with them.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My mother was my first inspiration. She has been doing it on her own since she was 16. Her story is so invigorating and she strives for greatness in every area of her life. She has taught me so much about dreaming big and following through. Pushing through the tough parts of life and doing everything with a smile on her face and gratitude in her heart.
My daughter inspires me on a daily basis. She is the reason I do what I do and she has made me the person I am today. She teaches me so many things about myself and about life. Allowing me to see the world through another set of eyes has changed my perspective on so many levels.
To be quite honest, entrepreneurs, in general, are so inspiring. To watch people push through adversity to achieve their dreams is something so incredible. I think no matter what your gender, race or color is, we all have certain hurdles to overcome. We are all powerful in our own way, we just have to learn to tap into our greatness. I love meeting people and hearing their journey because each one tells of a different story and I feel like I take away something different each time.
